If you are like me and have not been brought up around computers, we now find ourselves in a world that often seems to measure success through accolades, titles, and tangible achievements, many of us grapple with a persistent and nagging feeling of self-doubt known as imposter syndrome. It's that relentless voice in your head telling you that you're not good enough, that you've somehow faked your way to where you are, and soon, everyone will find out. But fear not I tell you, there is a remedy that resides in the heart of creativity and that is art.
What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and have an internalised fear of being exposed as a "fraud." Despite evidence of their competence, their art, their craft, those experiencing this syndrome remain convinced that they do not deserve the success they have achieved. It's a common experience, affecting lots of people across various fields and walks of life and I certainly suffer from it when I’m creating my work.

There is a seemingly immense pressure to constantly produce original, groundbreaking work, to create the best Insta posts, the most TikTok reels, gain the most followers, be the best influencer and this can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy among artists, writers, musicians, and creators of all kinds. The fear of being "found out" can stifle creativity and lead to burnout and blocks, leading to ‘dry’ spells of no art at all. So, how can we combat these feelings and begin to believe in ourselves?
Is the power of art truly healing?
More and more, people are now looking for ways to stop the cycle of doom scrolling and trying to find other ways to occupy their time. Art, in its myriad forms, can offer a sanctuary for the troubled mind and soul. It provides an outlet for expression, a means to process emotions, and a way to connect with others on a deeply human level and it can invoke conversation whether you like the art or not! Here are a few reasons why art can be a balm for the soul, particularly for those struggling with imposter syndrome:
1. Self-Expression and Authenticity
Engaging in art allows us to express ourselves in ways that words often cannot. Whether through painting, writing, music, or dance, art encourages us to explore and reveal our inner worlds. Remember doodling? Scribbles on a piece of paper and then colouring in, mindless circles drawn on a scrappy piece of paper? This act of creation fosters a sense of authenticity, helping us to accept and celebrate who we are, rather than who we think we should be.

2. Mindfulness and Presence
Creating art requires focus and attention, ‘drawing’ us into the present moment ( get it?). This mindfulness can quiet the incessant chatter of self-doubt and allow us to experience peace and clarity. So many people have turned to colouring books to relax and have rediscovered the childish pleasure at just colouring in between the lines and creating a joyful page of colour. Remember painting by numbers? This form of art takes away the pressure of the making the original art, but allows us to be immersed in the process itself. By immersing ourselves in this creativity, we can temporarily set aside our worries and simply be.
3. Building Resilience and Confidence
Art teaches us resilience. Not every piece will be a masterpiece, and that's okay. The process of creating and improving over time builds confidence and reminds us that growth is a journey. Overcoming challenges in art can translate to overcoming challenges in life, helping us to see our worth beyond our perceived flaws. Be mindful of not putting too much pressure on yourself, as this will have the opposite effect!
4. Connection and Community
Art has the power to connect us with others who share similar experiences and emotions. Joining an art group and drawing and painting with likeminded people, boosters confidence with shared creativity .This sense of community can be incredibly validating and serve as a reminder that we are not alone in our worries.

You are Enough.
If you're grappling with imposter syndrome, art can be a transformative tool for healing and self-discovery. Allow yourself the freedom to create without judgment or expectation and rediscover your inner child. Learn to love the imperfections and see them as part of your unique self.
Remember, art is not about proving your worth to others but about affirming your worth to yourself. Through the act of creation, we can begin to quiet the voices of doubt and embrace the authenticity that resides within us all. Let art be the light that guides you back to your true self, reminding you that you are enough, just as you are.
